LA ETAPA Is Latin Urban + EDM That Screams “Deal With Us!”
New York, NY, April 19, 2024 - Renowned Mexican-American singer-songwriter and LGBTQ+ icon Renee Goust (pronounced “ghost”) and acclaimed producer, composer and bassist Khylie Rylo (they/them) have released LA ETAPA, the second single from their upcoming album, Cyber Mashaka.This time, the dynamic duo offers an unabashed declaration of equality, taking patriarchy and organized religion to task for their unconscionable bigotry. The new single and its accompanying music video were released the Friday before International Lesbian Visibility Week. Coincidence? Absolutely not.Following closely on the heels of their first single, QUE SE CUIDE ESE MUCHACHO, Goust and Rylo once again come out of the gate raging against the machine. It’s a revival of the old LGBTQ battlecry “We’re here, we’re queer, we’re not going anywhere.” But this time, the message is delivered with cutting lyrics, bombastic beats and an undeniable pop hook that will play on repeat in your brain every waking moment of the day.Soy la lesbiana! declares Goust on the downbeat of the first verse. It’s a manifesto, even a dare: you will never hide me away. Goust and Rylo have had enough of the myopia endemic to a society terrified of change. There is no backing down from this fight. The two non-binary co-producers have adopted a “go big or go home” mentality and Goust proves it by debuting as an accordionist on this track. It is always the time to amplify the voices that have been historically silenced.“I genuinely think being genderqueer puts people at risk in 99% of the world,” says Renee Goust, who uses she/they pronouns. “And that’s why it means so much to sing for those who don’t yet have equal rights and opportunities. My orientation is not a phase, it’s an identity that I am proud of and that I would choose again, if I had the chance to.”Renee Goust and Khylie Rylo create an alchemy that defies categorization. Their tight, 3-minute bangers mix the best parts of Regional Mexican music with elements of EDM and hip-hop. While you can certainly hear the influence of their Mexican-borne contemporaries like Peso Pluma and Fuerza Regida, Goust and Rylo add the element of forceful, combative social commentary. It’s clear they do not intend to be ignored.As Khylie Rylo put it, “We’re settling undiscovered territory, a move that has always required courage and conviction. This is a new mix of styles with lyrics designed to start a riot. You either love it, or you hate it.”Throwing fire like that demands a video to match, and LA ETAPA’s visuals do not disappoint. Ciudad de México a jueves 18 de abril del 2024La renombrada cantante y compositora mexicanoestadounidense e ícono feminista LGBT+, Renee Goust, y el aclamado productor y bajista Khylie Rylo, han lanzado hoy LA ETAPA, el segundo sencillo de su próximo álbum, CYBER MASHAKA, el cual cuenta con la colaboración de lx celebradx poeta yolanda segura.En esta ocasión, el dúo dinámico ofrece una declaración sin reservas que cuestiona al patriarcado y a la religión organizada por su intolerancia y violencia.Siguiendo de cerca los pasos de su primer sencillo, QUE SE CUIDE ESE MUCHACHO (REMIX), Goust y Rylo se salen de su jaula una vez más, arremetiendo contra el sistema cisheteropatriarcal. “LA ETAPA” es un renacimiento de los antiguos gritos de batalla LGBTTTI+ que se negaban a callar. Mexican-American singer-songwriter Renee Goust seeks to make historically underrepresented groups visible in Mexican music. Her songs “La cumbia feminazi” and “Querida muerte (No Nos Maten)” are well-established gender equality hymns in Latin America.Her music has been featured in celebrated publications, including Billboard, Rolling Stone, and El País. Renee has taken the stage as a performer at renowned venues like Lincoln Center and the Guggenheim Museum in New York and El Cantoral and El Zócalo in Mexico City. She has also sung for the UN, the Women's Strike in NY, and LGBTQ+ marches in New York, Mexico City, and La Paz, Bolivia.Goust is an accomplished composer who has created original music for international films and theater productions. In 2021, Renee received the New York City’s Women’s Fund grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts, leading to her album Resister, which she created with a team of twenty-seven women and non-binary individuals.In 2022, Renee Goust was appointed Cultural Ambassador of the United States as part of the American Music Abroad program. Khylie Rylo (they/them) is a bassist, singer, composer and EDM producer in New York City.After studying jazz and classical bass at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Khylie became part of the NYC jazz scene before moving on to work with iconic hip-hop artists, including DJ Johnny Juice, Chuck D and Public Enemy, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels (Run DMC) and Kool Kim.As a composer, Khylie has created original music for the world-famous video game FORTNITE, luxury brands like Khiel’s and Rodan + Fields, and various indie films and podcasts.Other upcoming projects include a reggaeton-tinged EP with actress Paola Lazaro (The Walking Dead); a self-produced collection of EDM and House music; and co-writing, singing and playing bass on the new solo album by Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, founding member of the iconic Run DMC.

Querétaro native yolanda segura is a lesbian-queer writer and transfeminist poet.Winner of the Carmen Alardin National Poetry Award and the Francisco Cervantes National Poetry Award, segura has published four critically acclaimed books of poetry and holds a doctorate in Latin American Letters from the National University of Mexico.They are currently developing series and scripts for various streaming platforms, including Sony and HBO.
yolanda segura (Querétaro, 1989) Es unx escritorx lesbiana-queer transfeminista.Ha publicado cuatro libros de poesía, también ensayos y artículos varios. Obtuvo el Premio Nacional de Poesía Carmen Alardín 2018 y el Premio Nacional de Poesía Francisco Cervantes 2017.Es doctora en Letras Latinoamericanas por la UNAM. Actualmente se dedica al desarrollo de series y guiones para diversas plataformas de streaming y productoras.
